What Is SEO, Really?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your website show up when people search for what you sell on Google.
That’s it. No mystery. No magic.
When someone in your city types “plumber near me” or “web designer for small business” or “best Italian restaurant downtown” — SEO determines whether they find you or your competitor.
The 3 Pillars of SEO
1. Technical SEO (Is Google able to read your site?)
This is the foundation. If Google can’t properly crawl and understand your website, nothing else matters.
The essentials:
- Fast page speed — under 3 seconds on mobile
- Mobile-friendly — works on any screen size
- HTTPS — secure (the padlock icon in the browser)
- Clean URL structure —
/services/web-designnot/page?id=473 - Sitemap — tells Google what pages exist
- No broken links — 404 errors hurt your ranking
How to check: Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights. Fix anything flagged red.
2. On-Page SEO (Does your content match what people search for?)
This is about having the right words in the right places.
Key elements:
- Title tag — the clickable headline in search results. Include your main keyword. Keep under 60 characters.
- Meta description — the snippet below the title. Write a compelling 155-character summary.
- H1 heading — one per page, includes your target keyword
- Content — actually answers the question someone Googled
- Internal links — link between your own pages strategically
- Image alt text — describe images for accessibility and Google
Example: If you’re a dentist in Austin, your homepage title should be: “Family Dentist in Austin, TX | Dr. Smith Dental” NOT: “Welcome to Our Website | Home”
3. Off-Page SEO (Does the internet trust you?)
Google uses links from other websites as “votes of confidence.” More quality links = higher rankings.
How to get links naturally:
- Get listed in local directories (Yelp, Yellow Pages, industry-specific)
- Set up Google Business Profile (critical for local businesses)
- Ask satisfied clients for reviews
- Create useful content that people want to share
- Join local business associations (they often link to members)
The Local SEO Shortcut
If you serve a specific area, local SEO is your fastest path to page 1.
Do these today:
- Claim your Google Business Profile at business.google.com
- Fill every field — hours, services, photos, description
- Get 5+ reviews — ask your best customers to leave Google reviews
- NAP consistency — your Name, Address, Phone must be identical everywhere online
- Local keywords — include your city in your title tags and content
Most small businesses can rank in the local “map pack” (the top 3 results with the map) within 2–3 months by doing just these 5 things consistently.
Content That Ranks
Google rewards websites that comprehensively answer questions. The best way to do this:
Write blog posts that answer questions your customers actually ask.
For a landscaper:
- “How much does landscaping cost in [city]?”
- “Best time to plant grass in [state]”
- “How often should you water new sod?”
For an accountant:
- “Do I need an LLC or S-Corp?”
- “Small business tax deadlines 2025”
- “How to track business expenses”
Each blog post targets one specific question. Over time, Google sees you as an authority on that topic and ranks your site higher for related searches.
What NOT to Waste Time On
- Keyword stuffing — writing “best plumber Austin” 50 times doesn’t work. It gets you penalized.
- Buying links — Google detects and penalizes paid link schemes
- Obsessing over meta keywords — Google hasn’t used this since 2009
- Changing things daily — SEO takes 3–6 months to show results. Be patient.
- Hiring “SEO agencies” that guarantee #1 ranking — nobody can guarantee that. Run.
The Timeline
Be realistic about expectations:
| Timeframe | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Month 1 | Technical fixes, Google Business Profile, initial content |
| Month 2–3 | Start appearing for long-tail keywords, reviews coming in |
| Month 3–6 | Consistent traffic growth, ranking for target terms |
| Month 6–12 | Compounding results, competing for competitive terms |
SEO is a long game. But unlike ads, the results don’t disappear when you stop paying.
